The Agency of Corrections, in its efforts to promote the diverse rehabilitative programs within correctional institutions, is dedicated to helping every inmate repent, improve themselves, and refrain from reoffending, with the ultimate goal of successfully reintegrating into society. In line with this mission, the agency organized the 2024 Calligraphy Contest as part of the arts and cultural rehabilitation activities for inmates. The contest aims to encourage participants to clear their minds of distractions before picking up their brushes, and to showcase the brilliant results of their self-reflection during incarceration through their calligraphy.

The theme of the competition focused on four core values: "inspiration, moral persuasion, self-discipline, and appreciation," with participants choosing one of these concepts for their calligraphy work. Each correctional institution held preliminary rounds, selecting the best works to compete in the regional semifinals across the four zones: North, Central, South, and East. From there, the top five, ten outstanding, and ten selected works advanced to the finals. To ensure an objective and rigorous evaluation process, the agency invited esteemed calligraphy experts to form a professional judging panel. This panel included Chairman Chen Lüwen of the Taoyuan City Calligraphy Association, President Sung Liangming of the Jingxin Calligraphy Association, and Honorary Chairman Chen Jiazhang of the Taiwan Calligraphy Society. Out of 100 entries, they selected 28 winning pieces: 3 grand prizes, 5 top prizes, 10 outstanding works, and 10 selected entries. In total, 28 inmates from 12 correctional institutions received awards. The award ceremony was held on October 18, 2024, at the host institution, where Chairman Chen and President Sung provided insightful critiques of the winning pieces. Their commentary allowed attendees to appreciate the beauty and charm of traditional calligraphy.

Taichung Prison emerged as the biggest winner in this competition, securing 3 grand prizes, 3 top prizes, and 2 outstanding works. Penghu Prison followed closely with 4 award recipients, while Dongcheng Prison had 3 winners, making their achievements equally impressive. Although the awardees were unable to attend the ceremony in person, representatives from their respective correctional institutions were present to accept the awards on their behalf. Correctional staff from the Taoyuan region also attended the ceremony to show their support, giving the winners the highest recognition and encouragement.

Calligraphy is not merely a form of visual aesthetics; it is an art that elevates the mind to a state of "respect, purity, tranquility, and reflection." Inmates have consistently performed exceptionally well in competitions organized outside the correctional system, demonstrating the remarkable results of rehabilitative education. The winning works, along with the judges' comments and event details, will be compiled into an e-book and made available on the Agency of Corrections' website. The physical works will also be exhibited during next year’s (2025) cultural and educational activities. The Agency of Corrections sincerely invites the public to attend and appreciate these works, and warmly welcomes support and feedback from all.
