Celebrate Mother's Day - Creative Four-panel Comic Contest

In order to encourage the inmates to engage in proper leisure activities and to stimulate their potential for artistic creation, the Superintendent organized a “Creative Four-panel Comic Contest” under the theme of “Celebrating Mother's Day”. Through the creation of comics, the inmates were guided to express their gratitude and respect to their mothers or elders in their families, to further realize the true meaning of filial piety and gratitude, and to strengthen the emotional connection of the family, so as to cultivate a positive outlook on life in an entertaining manner.

In this competition, the inmate, A-Ming (a pseudonym), stood out from the crowd with his exquisite writing skills and original story ideas, and was unanimously recognized by the judges. After winning the award, Ming shared that the inspiration for his work came from his longing and nostalgia for his family. He said that each frame in the comic is a snapshot of his memories with his mother, and he hopes to express his gratitude and guilt towards her through his paintings. He emotionally recalled that his mother had worked so hard to nurture him without complaint, while he himself had gone astray due to his youthful ignorance, breaking her heart. He is now deeply remorseful and grateful to his mother for never gave up on him, and hopes that he can change his ways and never let his mother down again.

Huang Hong-Hsi, Warden of the Prison, said that family is the most important force to support a person to start afresh, and mother's love is the most profound and selfless support. He hoped that through this four-panel comic drawing activity, the inmates would be inspired to feel a deep emotional resonance, realize the greatness and tolerance of their mother's love, and then reflect on their own past, and be inspired to change for the better, so as to become a positive force in their families in the future.

The judging was conducted by the Secretary to the Superintendent together with the Heads of Departments. The focus of the judging included whether the artwork was in line with the theme of Mother's Day, the fluency of the comic narrative, the drawing skills and the expression of creativity, etc., and the winning artworks were finally selected and awarded with prizes. The winning entries will be posted on the Correctional Services Department's bulletin board for the appreciation of all staff and inmates in order to create a culture of art appreciation and deepen the core value of filial piety and gratitude.
