Restorative Justice Reflection Writing Contest
To enhance inmates' capacity for self-reflection, this correctional facility organized a “Restorative Justice Reflection Writing Contest” in October 2025. The initiative aimed to deepen their understanding of the harm caused by criminal behavior and assist them in cultivating restorative and responsible capabilities through introspection. Centered on the “Writing Intervention” program developed by the Corrections Division, the activity enabled inmates to clarify their thoughts and organize their experiences through writing. This process helped them identify the motivations and consequences behind their actions, prompting them to rethink their future paths.
The competition was open to all inmates. Most entries focused on core restorative justice concepts such as understanding harm, accepting responsibility, and seeking restoration. The writings demonstrated high levels of self-awareness, ranging from reflections on the perspectives of victims, families, and society, to analyses of personal criminal causes, and finally to aspirations for restoring family relationships and reconnecting with society. Most participants indicated that the writing process enabled them to confront their past selves. Though challenging, they recognized the importance of processing emotions and understanding harm, gaining a deeper appreciation for the multifaceted impacts of crime.
A review panel formed by relevant departments evaluated submissions based on criteria including writing fluency, emotional authenticity, and grasp of restorative concepts. Award-winning works demonstrated profound depth of reflection: some acknowledged causing prolonged family suffering through emotional impulsivity; others identified sources of past trauma through writing; still others conveyed years of guilt and unspoken apologies to victims and families through their words. Through writing and guidance, inmates gradually rebuild emotional connections with their families and society, demonstrating a more mature approach to confronting their past.
Restorative justice is not merely a system but an attitude. Through understanding, empathy, and responsible action, it enables offenders to confront the harm they caused, learn to make amends, and take responsibility for change. Writing activities provide inmates with a safe, autonomous space for reflection, transforming it from a mere formality into a profound inner force for transformation.
Moving forward, this correctional facility will steadfastly uphold the philosophy of “cultivating virtue and guiding inmates back to the right path,” strengthening diverse, compassionate rehabilitation strategies to accompany inmates on their journey of reintegration. Simultaneously, we will integrate safer, more inclusive social support networks—including emotional regulation courses, mindfulness groups, and family connection programs—to help inmates build capacity for accountability and restoration. With comprehensive support, inmates will embark anew with greater maturity.
